Medical-Objects

Who this page is for: the practice manager whose referrers send on Medical-Objects and who wants a straight answer about where it sits.

Medical-Objects is the second of Australia’s secure messaging rails, and it is Refera’s named next rail after HealthLink. It is not yet connected, and this page says so plainly rather than hiding it in fine print.

  • The sender picks the rail. A practice does not choose which network its referrals arrive on - the referring GP’s software does. Where a referrer’s system sends on Medical-Objects, being reachable means being reachable on Medical-Objects.
  • The clear second rail nationally, strongest in Queensland. Medical-Objects has been independent and Australian-owned since 2002, with 130,500+ connected health professionals across 15,000+ sites (vendor-stated). Its footprint is heaviest in Queensland - whole regions where referrers default to it.
  • Receiving can start at zero licence cost. Medical-Objects publishes a free receive-only plan (its Basic plan, with install and support included - vendor-stated), so once a Refera connection exists, a practice can be reachable on the rail without a licence fee for receiving.

These facts come from Refera’s secure-messaging networks brief (see the source note on this page), which records what is vendor-stated and what is independently verified.

A Medical-Objects connection does not exist in Refera today. Medical-Objects carries the same HL7 v2 REF message format Refera’s adapter already parses - but parsing a format is not a connection. The delivery mechanics also differ from HealthLink: Medical-Objects delivers in real time through its own local client rather than store-and-collect, and no Refera endpoint has been stood up, tested or certificated on the network. We do not claim it works before it does. Status and roadmap is where that changes first, not a sales conversation.

Where the build stands: the connector client is built and tested against the documented API shapes - awaiting test certificates from Medical-Objects before anything touches the live network.

Tell us which rails your referrers actually send on. The build order follows measured referrer coverage, not guesswork - a list of your top referring practices (or just their suburbs) is enough for us to check the public directories. Email [email protected].

Meanwhile, mailbox and fax paths can be configured, verified with patient-free messages and separately enabled while Medical-Objects remains unavailable. Direct upload remains unavailable until its source-document controls pass. This can still cover secure-message referrals that a GP also prints, faxes or emails.

Refera tracks referral admin only. It does not triage patients.

Examples are fictional and contain no patient information. Practice staff approve every external action. Refera never auto-sends or independently contacts patients.
